Presenters' Bios


Ellen Dougherty is a doctoral candidate, concentration in TESOL,  cognate technology, at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. She holds an MA in Leadership from McGill University.  She has over 25 years experience with second language learners both as an educator and administrator in North America and the Middle East.  Email: ellen.dougherty@unlv.edu

 

Sandra Rogers has a bilingual elementary teaching certificate and a Masters in TESOL.  Recently, she completed the TESOL certificate in the Principles & Practices of Online Teaching.  She served as a dual language Pre-K demonstration teacher for UCLA’s laboratory school.  Ms. Rogers also taught Spanish bilingual Kindergarten classes for the Los Angeles School District and served as a literacy coach. Currently, she teaches college reading online for the University of South Alabama, rates TOEFL and TOEIC speaking tests online for ETS, and runs a nonprofit. Email: sandrogers123@yahoo.com

 

Dr. Christel Broady is an associate professor of education at Georgetown College and the program director of the ESL endorsement program. Dr. Broady’s interests include advocacy, technology, and communities of practice in the areas of ESL and World Languages. Dr. Broady’s professional leadership includes regional, state, national, and global positions.  Examples include past president of and past and current board member on the KYTESOL, steering board member of the TESOL Elementary Education IS Steering Committee, TESOL/NCATE USA ESL program reviewer, Chair-Elect of the TESOL Elementary Education IS, and multiple other positions. Dr. Broady believes that educators need to be professional leaders in order to present the latest in the discipline and shape it.  Dr. Broady’s list of publications and presentations is extensive and includes research, articles, regional, national, and international talks, teacher professional developments, and workshops. Among many other honors, she was chosen globally as an affiliate’s best presentation at TESOL.  Professional honors Dr. Broady received over the past 20 years range from workplace service rewards at several institutions, professional recognitions, to KYTESOL and multiple awards from TESOL, such as the TESOL leadership award.  Dr. Broady is proud of her  teaching awards by student nomination received at different institutions.

 

Margaret McKenzie is currently a district administrator for ESOL in Cobb County School District, a district just outside of Atlanta, GA. She holds an MA in Educational Leadership with Technology Concentration from Kennesaw State University and is currently a doctoral candidate in Ed Leadership at Mercer University. Stacey Abbott received both her Bachelor of Science degree in Interdisciplinary Studies with an Emphasis in Bilingual Education and Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction from Texas A&M University.  Stacey obtained her Education Specialist in Educational Leadership from Lincoln Memorial University.  Stacey has taught in transitional (late exit) bilingual classrooms, dual immersion classrooms, ESOL push in and pull out programs, as well as general education classrooms over the past 18 years. She currently serves as the assistant principal of an elementary school in Cobb County, Georgia, an online instructor for Casenex ESOL, and an adjunct professor at Kennesaw State University.    Email: stacey.abbott@cobbk12.org

 

Benjamin Fabie has an MAT in TESOL from Kennesaw State University along with a certification in Early Childhood Education. He is currently teaching underprivileged ELL students at a   Title I school in Cobb County, Georgia. He has also been a professional development instructor for his school district's ESOL endorsement program. Dr. Karen Kuhel is an Assistant Professor of TESOL in the Department of Inclusive Education at Kennesaw State University (KSU). She has an MATESOL from American University in Washington, DC and a Ph.D. in teacher education (curriculum and instruction) from The University of Florida. Dr. Kuhel has designed, administered and taught in program for English learners in the United States and Brazil. At KSU, she was lead on development of the Masters of Arts in TESOL, M.Ed. in Inclusive Education: TESOL Concentration, and ESOL Endorsement programs and served as TESOL Graduate Program Coordinator from 2005-2010.  She collaborates with colleagues in surrounding school districts and across the Bagwell College of Education, Professional Teacher Education Unit, and University in the areas of ESOL and culturally and linguistically responsive teaching.  Her current research includes integration of culturally and linguistically responsive teaching into the Mathematics Master of Arts program as part of a Noyce National Science Foundation Grant and systematic embedding technology into the TESOL graduate programs.
